It is unknown who invented Sikaku or where this type of puzzle first appeared was published.

Descriptions

四角に切れ [shikaku ni kire] means something like »cut into squares« (»cut into squares").

The original English name for Nikoli was “Divide by Squares”. Later Nikoli apparently realized that in the Western world there are squares and rectangles are something different and has the translation into »Divide by Box« changed. But the Japanese name has remained the same.

Sikaku vs. Shikaku vs. Schikaku: “Schikaku” is the correct pronunciation English spelling would be “Shikaku” (since English doesn’t have “sh”). However, “Sikaku” is also common and we have this name taken over before we knew the background.

Toriod, Toroidal, Torus: Upper and lower Edge or left and right edge of the diagram are attached to each other; the Diagram thus resembles the surface of a tire.

Pairs: Each rectangle contains exactly two numbers; the area of rectangle is the sum of these two numbers.

Pairs: Each rectangle contains one or two numbers. If there are two Contains numbers is the area of the rectangle is the sum of these two Pay.

Dotted: Some fields are marked. Marked fields are part of the rectangles, but do not count towards the area. Example: A 2x3 Rectangle with a marked square has an area of 5, not 6. [Puzzle Picnic, »Rectangles«].

Pentomino: The diagram also contains fields with circles. The Rectangles do not completely cover the chart, leaving boxes. These supernumerary fields result in all possible pentominoes exactly once. The Pentominoes do not touch each other orthogonally; Circular fields must be closed belong to different pentominoes.
